SUMMARY OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Laboratory research concentrates on the mechanisms involved in brain damage resulting from epileptic seizures and the means of preventing it. The work relies on both clinical research and basic science using new antiepileptic drugs, surgery, and the study of the neuropsychological impact of seizures on human development. Both in vivo and in vitro studies are done to develop new treatments to control epileptic seizures and seizure-induced brain damage in order to gain understanding of the pathophysiology of this complex process.

Research focuses on, among other things, the role of intracellular calcium stores and their release by metabotropic glutamate receptors. For our in vivo studies, we use video-EEG monitoring of rats exposed to kainic acid. We also use tests that measure neuropsychological function, mainly the Water Maze, and neuropathological assessments of hippocampal lesions.

Presently, we are developing a model for the study of atypical febrile seizures. For our in vitro tests, we use patch-clamp intracellular recordings of neurons, which we combine with simultaneous calcium imaging techniques to correlate neurophysiological changes with fluctuations in intracellular calcium.
