Research in Neurological Sciences Unit SUMMARY OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Dr. Butterworth holds a doctoral degree from the University of London, and is interested in the genetic aspects of metabolic encephalopathies (Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, hepatic encephalopathy, uremic encephalopathy) as well as the interactions of alcohol and vitamin B1 in the central nervous system. His lab group works to identify the monoaminergic and glutametergic systems in hepatic encephalopathy as well as the amino acid neurotransmitters (GABA, glycine, glutamate, taurine). Dr. Butterworth was President of the International Society of Neurochemistry from 2005-2007, and is currently President of the International Society for Hepatic Encephalopathy and Nitrogen Metabolis.
